Ash is the duo of Aurelia Shrenker and Eva Salina Primack.
“It is extremely rare for singers from one cultural frame to capture the true essence and expression of another culture, no less of several different cultures. Aurelia Lucy Shrenker and Eva Salina Primack do this effortlessly and with extraordinary technical skill and artistic innovation. Their singing simply takes my breath away. ”
-Ethel Raim, Center for Traditional Music and Dance (www.ctmd.org)
Aurelia Shrenker and Eva Salina Primack performed as Ash from 2007-2011, and this partnership led them to further explore Appalachian, Corsican and Ukrainian music in addition to the traditions they know best, those of Georgian and Balkan music. Drawing these seemingly disparate cultures closer to one another through their work, Ash formed a genre of its own. Aurelia and Eva chose the name Ash (Æ) because it represents something of a dual nature–not singular, not plural, but exactly two. Ash toured and performed internationally to diverse audiences in venues ranging from Joe’s Pub in New York City to Ashkenaz in Berkeley, CA, and on stages in Bulgaria and the Republic of Georgia. In addition to their first album, released in 2009, Ash is featured in the soundtracks of “The Great Soviet Eclipse” and “The Book of Wisdom and Lies”, the latest two films produced under the auspices of The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles, CA.
