spring singing class series information:
Wednesday Night Balkan Singing Classes, SPRING Edition, April 3- May 15
Dates of Class Meetings:
April 3, 10, 17, 24
May 1, 8, 15
Class will meet on Wednesday nights from 7:30-9:30pm in Park Slope. (Close to R train at Union St).
This is the 7th time I have held this type of class series.
It’s a comfortable and friendly environment, a relatively informal way to learn great songs and Balkan-specific vocal technique, and it’s a small enough group that you get individual attention.
We’ll learn a number of songs about Spring from different Balkan musical traditions. As always, I’ll pick from my favorite songs, and include a wide variety of repertoire in my classes: single melody songs, melody-and-drone songs, three-part harmony songs, and some polyphony as well. Repertoire will be drawn from various Balkan folk singing traditions–also possibly some surprises from neighboring/related traditions.
In class, I’ll take time and pay close attention to pronunciation, vocal placement and production, ornamentation, stylistic variations between regions, and personal expression.
To supplement the classes, I provide source recordings, and multi-track recordings of myself (singing the parts, going over pronunciation, breaking down ornaments) so that the songs will stay with you long after the class is over.
The class is open to singers with all levels of experience, however ability to match pitch and interest in singing close harmonies is really helpful in the group learning process. If you struggle with pitch or harmony singing but want to improve in these areas, private lessons could be a great complement to group classes.
The 7 class series is $140, due in full at the first class meeting. The series is cumulative and full-time participation leads to the greatest results for everyone, so there is no drop-in option. If you have one or two pre-existing conflicts at the time you sign up for the class, I will honor those and pro-rate accordingly. To enroll, please send an email to bookevasalina at gmail dot com.
